Everyday your computer is at risk.
Learning about antivirus software is a must for all p/c owners.
The days of downloading a program or email is the least of your worries.
Now web 2.0 better known as social websites are leaving you exposed.
Computer hacking can happen to OS X or Vista.
On March 2008 the Pwn2Own contest, which was at the CanSecWest conference in Vancouver British Columbia.
Surprising the Mac got hacked first. This exploit took less than two minutes to pull off.
Yes Vista was hacked within 4 minutes after that.
Lets be honest in todays world your tax software banking password or any of your private information is at risk.
Did you know most antivirus companies offer 3 version of software?
Paid version
Demo-ware or trial-ware
Free version.
I can understand your question free version or paid version.
First lets talk about the free versions
Free version antivirus software is good for personal use.
You will not have all the bells and whistles (add-ons) but it is better than no protection.

Demo versions will go for a limited time but allow you to see what the software will do.
Then you can decide if this software will provide the protection you need.

A few important notes here before you start downloading and installing.
Uninstall your antivirus software before you install a new antivirus software or you may have problems.
Antivirus software does not like working with other antivirus software.

When evaluating software ask yourself:
How often does the antivirus update its virus list?
Can I do a deep scan any time?
Does it check email and files?
High CPU useage?
System crash due to system resources?
Can I operate other programs while the antivirus scans?
How fast is support via email?
I did use AVG but this software now uses High CPU and resources when scanning.
BitDefender has been working great give it a try here.
